CLEANING & MAINTAINING RAW DENIM

Raw denim requires a little extra care, but that doesn’t mean it should never be washed. It is meant to change with wear. Fading, softening, creasing and even eventual repairs are all part of the process. There is no perfect washing schedule. Wear your denim, pay attention to how it looks and feels, and clean when needed.

QUICK QUESTIONS

FOR SPOT CLEANING

If you get a small stain on your pair, start by spot cleaning.

Using a damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap, gently dab the affected area rather than rubbing it. Allow the denim to air dry completely.

You may notice some slight discolouration after spot cleaning. This should become less noticeable as the denim continues to be worn and develops more fades.

METHOD 1: MACHINE WASH

  1. Button up the fly and turn the jeans inside out to help reduce unnecessary abrasion to the outer surface and existing fades.
  2. Wash on a gentle cycle with cold water and a small amount of mild detergent. Wash the denim by itself, particularly during the first few washes, as indigo may transfer to other garments.
  3. Once the cycle is finished, remove the denim and hang it to air dry. Do not tumble dry.

Note:
Some indigo may continue to drip from the denim as it dries. Be mindful of where you hang it and what is underneath, as the indigo can stain other surfaces and fabrics.

METHOD 2: WASH BY HAND

Before you wash:
Raw denim will bleed indigo, particularly during the first wash. This is completely normal, but be mindful of the tub, basin and surrounding surfaces you use.

  1. Fill a bathtub or large basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Do not use hot water.
  2. Flip the denim inside out and submerge the denim completely. Gently agitate it in the water to remove any dirt or grime.
  3. Allow it to soak for approximately 45 minutes.
  4. Refill the tub with clean, lukewarm water and soak for another 10 minutes OR run lukewarm water over the jeans to help remove any remaining detergent.
  5. Remove the jeans and allow excess water to drain naturally. Do not wring or twist the fabric.
  6. Hang the jeans to air dry completely. Do not tumble dry.

Note:
Some indigo may continue to drip from the denim as it dries. Be mindful of where you hang it and what is underneath, as the indigo can stain other surfaces and fabrics.
